What Is Action Mode on iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro?

Starting with the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro, Apple is making it easier for anyone to capture much steadier video, even when moving around

We’ll take a closer look at Action Mode and how to make the most of the video capture setting.

What Is Action Mode?

Capturing video while standing still, or somewhat still, is easy. Just point your iPhone in the right direction. But that changes when you need to keep up with a moving subject.

Whether you are running around with a young child or something else, that causes your video to shake.

While the built-in video stabilization on your iPhone can help minimize that issue, there are times when you are really moving that video shake is inevitable and can ruin a recording.

But Action Mode on the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro can help change that. A special video stabilization mode can help in moments where you’d expect shaking.

Here’s a video that shows the results of Action Mode.

As you can see, it makes a huge difference in many situations.

How to Activate Action Mode

To get started with your own video in Action Mode, open up the stock Camera app on your iPhone and then switch over to Video.

Next to the flash toggle, select the Action Mode icon that looks like someone running. It will turn yellow and the Action Mode banner will appear on the screen. Press the record button to begin.

While Action Mode defaults to using the ultrawide lens, it’s available with all lenses on the iPhone camera. You can choose to capture video at either 1080p or 2.8k resolution at up to 60 frames per second. Find out more about the different video quality on an iPhone.

The capture method supports Dolby Vision HDR. Anyone with an iPhone 14 Pro can also shoot in Apple ProRes format.

For the best possible use, Action Mode requires a substantial amount of light. Anytime there isn’t enough, you’ll see a More Light Required Message on the screen.

To use the feature in lower light, head to Settings > Camera. Choose Record Video and then Turn on Action Mode Lower Light.

Action Mode Makes Capturing Video on the iPhone Even Better

With its powerful camera, the iPhone is perfect for recording life’s special moments while they happen. And the Action Mode makes it easy to capture stable and smooth video in many more situations.
